Geranium is a heady, earthy deep fragrance, with both feminine and masculine nuances.
Geranium essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the plant’s stems and leaves.
When made from young, green leaves, the scent is lighter with a lemony scent. However, if extracted from older leaves that have changed their colour, the oil will have a heavier more rose toned fragrance.
Geranium oil is known for its calming effects and is said to improve mental function, and lift the spirit, helping to ease depression and stress. It has been shown to have anti anxiety properties in studies with labouring women ,It is also used to help balance hormone levels and is useful for PMT and the Menopause.
Some limited studies have shown that Geranium oil has some clotting properties and may be useful to help heal wounds and that the claims that it contains anti – bacterial properties are correct.
Although there have been no proven studies geranium oil is also said to have rejuvenating properties for the skin and is said to help tighten and tone, it is a beautiful skin oil when mixed with some Rose and Frankincense in a carrier oil such as Argan or Fractionated Coconut.
As a large part of TDH ethos is to look to the earth to find remedies and to the past Geranium oil was used by the Egyptians as a skin treatment and to balance moods and has a long history of use worldwide. In African folk medicine it was used to treat wounds.
Geranium mixes well with Rose, Bergamot, Lavender and Rosemary. Geranium oil ( as with other essential oils ) should not be ingested, and should not be applied to pets, it is harmful to dogs.
People with latex and nut allergies should check the carrier oils used ( the oils used to dilute the pure essential oil and the oils used as carrier oils for massage)
